Overlooking Lake Bourget, Hautecombe Abbey is an iconic site in Savoie, perched above the peaceful shores of Lake Bourget.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Abbey long served as the necropolis of the House of Savoy.
More than just a religious monument, its thousand-year history, art and exceptional panorama make it a place of pilgrimage that attracts thousands of visitors each year in search of beauty and tranquillity.
Founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, the abbey quickly became a major spiritual and cultural centre.
From the Middle Ages onwards, it housed the tombs of the Counts and Dukes of Savoy, until they were moved to the Chapel of the Princes.
Transformed over the centuries, it is now managed by the Chemin Neuf Community, which ensures its spiritual life and heritage preservation.
Step inside the abbey to admire the richness of its neo-Gothic décor, created in the 19th century.
From its sculptures, including a Pietà inspired by Michelangelo’s masterpiece, to its frescoes and sumptuously decorated stucco vaults, every corner reflects exceptional craftsmanship.
The restored works of art, accessible during the visit, take you on a journey through centuries of history.
An audio guide is available, as well as a tour specially designed for children aged 8 to 13.
You can also discover hidden parts of the Abbey such as the gardens, the Marie-Christine Tower, the King’s terrace, the royal apartment lounges, and stunning views of Aix-les-Bains in the background.
